Yes, this is the first step - and sometimes the toughest one. Where in a world I can set up my Joomla?

First answer is the obvious one - where we did: at Rochen, the company which hosts all official Joomla sites.

But there are other choices too.

First of all, some rules of thumb, or the 5 commendments on choosing a Joomla hoster.

So, a good Joomla hoster should deliver an up-to-date LAMP (you know, Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server with:

  • Safe Mode Must be off
  • Register_globals Must be off
  • The company/team behind isn't new to the hosting industry
  • No 'Unlimited' space/bandwidth hosting is offered in their plans (I don't not like people who promise something they can't deliver)
  • Must be able to run Joomla (Don't laugh, this can be a real problem!)

A great Joomla hoster should add to the pack some niceties, as:

  • cPanel or similar for user account interface,
  • daily backups (as Rochen's fantastic Vault service)
  • live, 24/7 support
  • community services (forum, knowledgebase, etc.)
  • an affrodable price

Did I asked for too much? I don't think so. And I'm not alone. The Joomla.org team compiled and maintains a comprehensive list of the recommended Joomla hosters, along with direct link to their staff, so go there and take a look!
